Shed News — What’s been Happening…

July 19, 2017 By Paul L'Huillier

Projects

  1. Dust Collection & Extraction System — this is now complete with the Extractor Shed (see photo) being finished in late June. This large Shed project was co-ordinated by Ervin Beeston with the help of a number of members namely: Mal Darwent, Les Bevan, Warwick Mitchell, Len Sims & Rod van der Linden.
  2. Bunks — In late May 12 bunks were completed for the Outdoor School – Bogong. Irvin Beeston also co-ordinated this project ably assisted by Warwick Mitchell and Mal Darwent plus many helpers. In late 2014 the Shed built 31 bunks for the school – a total of 43 bunks to date.
  3. Spinning Wheel — this is being made for the Hospital to be used at future Fetes. Les Bevan is building this.
  4. Deer Guards — the Shed has made six so far for the Friends of the Clover Arboretum and installed them at the Clover Arboretum. Reg Hollonds, Les Bevan and Dick Puttyfoot have been working on these.
  5. Table Bench in Recreation Room — Due to Warwick Mitchell’s initiative and the with help from John Driver & Ian Erbacher the Shed now has a table bench (see photo) along the north wall of the Recreation Room.
  6. Hi Bay Lights — seven Hi Bay LED Lights have been installed in the Shed. Thanks to Warwick Mitchell, Dick Puttyfoot and Len Sims for the installation. The improvement in visibility is remarkable.
  7. Nest Boxes (possum & bird) — 20 of these are being built for the Kiewa Landcare Group. Warwick Mitchell is co-ordinating the construction with assistance from Ian Erbacher, Jordan McNicole, Billy Vasiliades, John Falle and Ian Howley.
  8. Knife Blocks — two of these are being made by Roland Passuello.

Other

  • Morning tea courtesy of AGL — in May the Shed members and some six AGL staff had a morning tea at the Shed. We have been very thankful to have had a close working relationship with AGL since we started construction.
  • Electrical work — Member Shane Clooney has done a lot of the electrical work for the Extractor System and Hi Bay Lighting. Thanks Shane.

  3. Shed Rules & Policies — Members are reminded of the rules and policies that the Shed has adopted – these are set out in the  yellow covered Induction Manual which all members have received. It is also available on the Shed website. The committee wishes to draw members attention for the need to be considerate of other members working in the Shed or who intend to work in the Shed (say) the next day. Please consider: cleaning up your work area (Shed doesn’t employ cleaners ), putting away tools used, moving (storing) your project so others can use the bench space, if the task has excessive noise then maybe work outside if weather and job are appropriate, using protective gear e.g. earmuffs, googles/full face protection and hand protection as appropriate (a Shed Health & Safety requirement). The Shed has a policy that requires members to be assessed (by a Workshop Panel member) in the use of tools and equipment.
  4. Shed Operating Days & Times — Tuesday & Wednesday 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Morning tea is at 10:30 am and is a great time to social and to get to know the other men. Gold coin donation thank you. The Lunch break is at 12:30 pm. You are most welcome.

Free Health Checks as part of the ‘Spanner in the Works’ program*  will be held on Wednesday 29th March starting at 10:00 am (BBQ Lunch at 12:30 pm – gold coin donation) and finishing at 2:30 pm. The sessions will be held in the Alex McCullough Hall. Their will be three health professionals on hand and there will be three appointments per half hour. The Check-Up will thus cater for 24 members with a half hour break for the BBQ lunch.

This approach to assessing men’s health has been developed for members of Men’s Sheds. It is different to the checkups that are undertaken by your GP. Experience of Spanner in the Works at other Sheds has been very positive and your involvement is highly recommended.

Bookings are essential and it’s ‘first in best dressed’. To book your place — Contact the secretary: Email: <secretary@mountbeautymensshed.org.au> or Mobile: 0428 500 123 or place your name on the list at the Shed  by Monday 27th March.
