Shed Projects

Relocation of equipment

Relocation of dust extractor piping – from left Mal Darwent & Irvin Beeston. With the movement of the metalwork equipment to the West Wing, some of the woodworking equipment is being moved to the south end of the Shed. Thanks to North East Home Improvement Co for the loan of the mobile scaffolding.
A lot of movement and rearranging of equipment in the main Shed.

Evaporative Coolers installed

Two Evaporative Coolers have been installed in the main Shed & the West Wing.

Nuts & Bolts

  1. Birthday Boys for October/November — Congratulations to birthday boys: Ken Darling, Campbell Ford, Henry Ziemnicki, Brian Keeble and Bob Ferris who will celebrated a birthday.
  2. Christmas Luncheon — This is planned for Sunday 12th December and RSVPs need to be in by Monday 22nd November. Cost is $15.00. See NOTICE above.
  3. Garage Sale — This is planned for New Years Day 1st January 2022 at the Shed.
  4. Welcome to New Members — Neil Tappe and Scottie Miller
  5. Holiday dates for the diary — Shed will close for the Christmas holidays on Wednesday 15th December and re-open on Tuesday 11th January 2022. With our new Evaporative Coolers it should be pretty comfortable working.
  6. U3A Film Night — At the Senior Citzens Centre – Tawonga Cres on Wednesday 10th November starting at 7:00 pm supper at the interval. Note – you don’t need to be a U3A member to attend. Movie is called Red Joan. It is the story of Joan Stanley, who was exposed as the K.G.B.’s longest-serving British spy. English-born Stanley (Dame Judi Dench), a Soviet and Communist Party sympathizer, becomes employed as a British government civil servant and gets recruited by the K.G.B. in the mid-1930s. She successfully transfers nuclear bomb secrets to Soviet Russia, which enables them to keep up with the west in the development of atomic weapons, and remains undetected as a spy for over half a century.
  7. Tools & Equipment for loan — as a Men’s Shed member you are entitled to borrow tools/equipment on a short-term basis. There is a Registration Book in the Recreation Room to fill out. Make sure you check with the Day Shed Supervisor that it is OK to borrow that item. It could be being used by another member for a project. Also, the Shed has a ‘Stair Climbing Trolley’ that it shares with the Kiewa Valley Opp Shop in Tawonga Crescent and this can be borrowed from them. Just mention you are a men’s shed member when asking..
  8. Evaporative Cooling System for the Shed — Two coolers are now installed. Thanks to NE Heating & Cooling for the installation of on one in the main Shed and the other in the West Wing. Dick Puttyfoot arranged for this to happen. Thanks Dick. Funds came from a Federal Government Volunteer Grant of $5,000.00 and the Shed contributed $3,000.00 from general funds.
  9. Cleaning Roster Duties — Noel has prepared a new roaster. A Duty LIst has been put up for display in the Kitchen and Toilet area. Please read and complete the tasks. Why am I on the Roster? The Shed policy is that all committee members and other regular users of the Shed either for work or socialising are expected to ‘do their bit’.
  10. Storage Shed Clean Out — A major task was cleaning up around the Storage Shed and also inside the shed. Two trailer loads of disgarded timber was taken to the tip and at last we have room to move in there. Thanks to Phil Armitage who built some extra storage racks.

Professor David Wood’s Funeral arrangements

The 2021 AGM was held last week with 27 in attendance. A great roll-up and the finger food prepared by Mark and Maureen Hardidge was very much appreciated. Thank you. It was a good social occasion with many members catching up after recent lockdowns.

As has been the case over a number of years committee members also select various portfolios that they are responsible for. For example: day shed supervisor, workshop panel, project coordinator, shed maintenance officer, external fundraising coordinator, assistant secretary, membership secretary, grant applications, health & safety sub-committee, first aid officer, website administrator, publicity officer (news bulletin), catering, welfare officer and policy development & review.

Membership is now Due!

At the recent AGM the members decided to keep the membership fee the same as last year i.e. $45.00 (individual) and $50.00 (business/organisation). This is now due and needs to be paid by 30th September 2021. Early payment is very much appreciated by the committee.

Please pay at the Bendigo back in person indicating that the payment is from you or preferably by Direct Credit into the Shed bank account.

Please note – payment cannot be made to Campbell at the Hardware and Drapery Store any longer. Thanks, Campbell for allowing some members to pay this way for a number of years. Please walk up the street and do it at the bank (note there are new Bendigo Bank trading hours).

The West Wing update

Donated pavers – thanks to Margaret Mills (Tawonga) and the hospital ladies gardening group via Sue Ryder the Shed has been donated sufficient pavers to complete the work under the extension verandah. Pictured on the job from left: Ian Howley, Mark Hardidge & Mal Darwent.

Projects

RSL seats at the Cenotaph – further progress.

Pictured is Phil Armitage boxing the concrete foundations to be poured for the two RSL seats at the Cenotaph.

Mount Bogong Snow Poles

The Kiewa Valley Historical Society has acquired three old metal snow poles that were located on the Staircase Spur leading to the summit of Mt Bogong. The shed will be doing some work on them prior to them being put on display near the Information Centre.

Some background — The poles were part of a pole line on the Staircase Spur of Mt Bogong placed there years ago to guide hikers and skiers. They are made of steel telescopic sections and have holes at intervals up the poles. Wind passing through these holes creates a whistling sound that helped guide hikers and skiers to follow the spur in low visibility.

Vic Parks recently brought the poles down by helicopter. Alpine Shire has given approval for the Kiewa Valley Historical Society to erect three poles outside the Visitor Information Centre. Ian Howley is coordinating this project for the Historical Society.
Erecting the Shade Sail required some lateral thinking by the boys. Tensioning was the problem. Using a vehicle, rope, shackles etc the job was completed. Pictured are from left: Peter Panozzo, Noel McDougal & Phil Armitage.

From left: Brian Keeble & Mal Darwent at the Mount Beauty Sawmill. Some time ago the Shed was donated (Sandy Sutherland) a lot of raw pine timber which Bruce Addinsall kindly allowed us to store at the Mill (free of charge). For it to be used it needed to be leveled and planed and Mal was doing this with assistance in Passuallo’s shed next to his house. So after three loads up and back, the job is done. Thank you Bruce for the storage space. Much appreciated.

Nuts & Bolts

  1. Birthday Boys for September — Congratulations to birthday boys: Ken Halse, Dick Puttyfoot, Len Sims and Michael Parkinson who will celebrated a birthday this month.
  2. October BBQ & General Meeting — Scheduled for Friday 15th October 2021 provided that restrictions ease to allow us a reasonable number of members in the Shed.
  4. Evaporative Cooling System for the Shed — To make working in the Shed bearable in the summer months the Shed is investigating installing an evaporative cooling system.
  5. Cleaning Roster Duties — Noel has prepared a new roaster. A new Duty LIst has been put up for display in the Kitchen and Toilet area. Please read and complete the tasks. Why am I on the Roster? The Shed policy is that all committee members and other regular users of the Shed either for work or socialising are expected to ‘do their bit’.

That Trolley (it’s a beauty!)—Some light relief from the boys. The trolley was loaned to us by Peter Panozzo to shift heavy equipment to the shed extension. Picutred from left are Noel McDougall & Ian Howley giving it a test. The president in the background appears not to be impressed.

AFL Grand Final at the Shed

An invitation

To Shed members, friends and others to view the Grand Final on our 65” TV on Saturday 25th September from 7:00 pm between Western Bulldogs (Dogs) and Melbourne (Demons).

Should be a great evening and an opportunity to meet other like-minded blokes for some mate-ship, camaraderie and fellowship.

You don’t have to be a ‘diehard’ football follower to enjoy the game and the company.

Hope to see some of you there.

The News Bulletin of the Mount Beauty & District Men’s Shed

We are OPEN again … Tuesday 14th Sept.

Welcome back after another forced lockdown break. Fortunately, it was not too long this time and many are keen to get back in the Shed and do the stuff we like doing.

The usual COVID-19 protocols apply i.e. QR Code check-in or alternative options, mask-wearing, hand sanitising, and 1.5m social spacing. NOTE – All members attending the Shed are expected to abide by the Vic Health Department rules. If you are not DON’T come!

Annual General Meeting (AGM) – Friday 17th Sept at 12 noon

The AGM is being held in conjunction with a social gathering (not a BBQ) but with light finger food, tea and coffee. There is NO CHARGE. Our Chef de Shed (Mark Hardidge) is arranging a variety of food that we will get stuck into following the AGM at 12 noon. Thanks Mark for organising this.

NOTE — We need to comply with current restrictions regarding gatherings indoors and we will be doing this i.e. 1 person per 4sqm with a maximum of 20 people in an area are the rules). We plan to use both the recreation room and West Wing to accommodate numbers or if a nice day the outside area.

Agenda items — President’s Report, Treasurers Report, Election of Office Bearers, setting the membership fee for 2021/22 and a small alteration to our constitution re membership. The excellent news is we have 10 nominations for committee positions already so it should be a short meeting.

Presidents Report by Dick Puttyfoot. Please read prior to the AGM.

The West Wing update

We have passed the final Alpine Shire Building Inspection. Well done Ian Howley (Shed Construction Manager) and all the helpers. The whole project started two years ago (planning, funding, building, outfitting the internals, landscaping). A huge undertaking but very satisfying now.

Final tasks will be — 1. Paving under the verandah (thanks to Len Sim and Margaret Mills for the donation of the pavers), 2. Moving equipment from the main shed into the West Wing and 3. Recladding the dust extracting shed.

One of the last tasks to complete the West Wing – paving under the verandah.

Projects

RSL seats at the Cenotaph

Two refurbished seats
Foundations dug for the two seats at the Cenotaph. They will face the flagpole.

Other Projects pending…

  • Community Project — Erecting signage along the Kiewa River Trail.
  • Community Project — Refurbishing three old metal snow poles retrevied from Mt Bogong to be used as an external display by the Kiewa Valley Historical Society.
  • Client Project — Making of six routed wooden signs for Howmans Gap Alpine Centre YMCA.
  • Shed Project — Installation of a CCTV security system.
  • Shed Project — Shifting equipment to the West Wing from the main Shed.
  • Shed Project — Making an electrical Kindling Splitter.
  • Shed Project — Paving under the West Wing verandah and landscaping the area.

Nuts & Bolts

  1. Birthday Boys for September — Congratulations to birthday boys: Ken Halse, Dick Puttyfoot, Len Sims and Michael Parkinson who will celebrated a birthday this month.
  2. West Peak Hotel Raffle held on Friday 20th August with $740.00 being raised.
  3. Just mention you are a men’s shed member when asking.
  4. West Wing Official Opening — This has been spoken about amongst the men but nothing is decided on yet. It most likely will not be anything as elaborate as the main shed opening five and a half years ago but more in the style of a larger morning tea just for members and supporters.
  5. Snooker/Billard Table for the Shed — This is being investigated.
  7. VMSA New Constitution — The state organisation recently held a Special General Meeting via video conferencing to approve a new consititution. Forty five Victorian Sheds attended.

The News Bulletin of the Mount Beauty & District Men’s Shed

The West Wing update

The West Wing Shed Extension is coming close to passing the final Alpine Shire Building Inspection. This will happen this Wednesday 4th August. Ian Howley (Construction Manager) deserves a huge thank you for all the work he has put into planning the building, organising contractors and shed members to see the project through to completion. The final task over the next month or so will be moving equipment from the main shed to the West Wing and adding work benches. Storage areas are completed. As an aside to this Ian was also the Construction Manager for the main shed which was opened nearly six years ago.

Ian Howley working in a small space (main shed mezzanine) installing the venting pipe for the toilets. This was a tough job but with the help of Dick Puttyfoot and Phil Armitage the job is completed.
Left: Barry Hinson next to the wash basin and bench which he has very expertly made and installed. Right: Ian Howley working on the outlet for the toilet venting.

Projects

Community Project — Refurbishment of old garden seats for the RSL to be placed at the Cenotaph near the hospital. Left: Brian Keeble routing the slats to go on the seats. Right: Paul L’Huillier cleaning, scraping, priming and top coating the wrought iron ends.
Community Project. Left: Henry Ziemnicki preparing one of three sites for the installation of the new Kiewa River Trail signs organised by the Upper Kiewa Valley Community Association. Right: Dick Puttyfoot trying out the new Electric Hand Dryer (an important addition during these COVID times).

Other Projects pending…

  • Community Project — Erection of a sign and noticeboard on the Mount Beauty Scout Hall.

  1. Birthday Boys for August — Congratulations to birthday boys: John Driver, John Hunt, Les Bevan and Jim Gargan who will celebrated a birthday this month.
  2. No BBQ in August. Due to the current COVID restrictions we can only have 10 people in the recreation room hence not enough space for a BBQ.
  3. Dick Puttyfoot — Dick recently had a medical procedure done and will be away from the Shed for a week or two. We wish him all the best with his rehab.
  4. Annual General Meeting (AGM) — Hopefully this will be held on Friday 17th September 2021 in conjunction with the monthly BBQ provided restrictions are eased.
  5. West Peak Hotel Raffle — The Shed is offered this opportunity every couple of months and is a very successful fundraising event. The next raffle will be on Friday 20th August starting at 5:30 pm for dinner with the raffle draws (20 of) starting at 7:00 pm. Come along with your wife, partner or bring a friend and support this community initiative by the Hotel and assist the Shed with its fundraising.
  6. Just mention you are a men’s shed member when asking.
  7. Men’s Shed Week — 30th August to 5th September 2021 — Look out for more details in the next Shed Torque. We will be celebrating the fundamentals of Men’s Sheds: connection, community and camaraderie.
  8. West Wing Official Opening — This has been spoken about amongst the men but nothing is decided on yet. It most likely will not be anything as elaborate as the main shed opening five years and a half years ago but more in the style of a larger morning tea just for members and supporters.
  9. No more Football/Netball gate money collecting — After eight years the Shed committee have decided not to continue with this activity for the remainder of the season. It has run its course for the Shed. We thank the Dederang Mount Beauty Football & Netball Club for the opportunity to use this activity as part of our fundraising.

Have You Done Your 30… today?

This is pretty good advice for all us Shedders, especially during the lockdown. To stay healthy 30 minutes of exercise is a minimum per day. Standing up doesn’t count, wandering around the house doesn’t cut it either. Open the door and get out there… (walk, ride …..)

The story focuses on his command responsibility as he fights the cold, the relentless night, the brutal sea, and his deep fatigue as he chases down the attacking submarines in the deadly game of cat and mouse. The exciting story, a thrilling ride-along with the beleaguered captain, so deeply portrays the elements of battle command that for a long period of time the book was used as a text at the US Naval Academy. BBQ Friday 14th May

It’s a great social gathering. See you there!

May BBQ Friday 14th May — the function starts at 11:30 am for a sit-down lunch at 12 noon. The cost is $7.00. Please bring the correct money. Feel free to bring a friend and introduce them to the Men’s Shed. Note — there will be no BBQ in June.

Fundraising Activities – on going

Currently the Men’s Shed is involved in two fundraising activities.

  • West Peak Hotel Raffles — the Shed is offered this opportunity every couple of months and is a very successful fundraising event. The next raffle will be on Friday 11th June starting at 5:30 pm for dinner with the raffle draws (20 of) starting at 7:00 pm.
  • Football/Netball Gate Raffles — the Shed has been collecting the gate entry money for the Dederang Mt Beauty Football & Netball Club’s home games for six years. The Shed sells raffle tickets for a trailer load of wood or a $150.00 Bunnings voucher and that is how we raise funds. This season we are only collecting for the four Mt Beauty home games. The other five are held at Dederang. There is one more Mt Beauty Home Game to attend and that is on Saturday 29th May.
The coordinator Dick Puttyfoot is always looking for volunteers to assist. If you can, please call him for details – mobile: 0417 836 841.
Would you let these guys park your car? From left: Mark Hardidge, Peter Zumpe & Dick Puttyfoot. Parking for the Mt Beauty Bike Club’s Enduro Event on Sunday 18th April at the Mountain Bike Park. Shed collected a gold coin donation from patrons. There were 300 entries for this major event.

Neighbourhood Centre Project completed

It has taken a while but this big Neighbourhood Centre Project has finally been completed. It involved erecting a new garden shed including preparing the concrete foundations, relocating the fence and building extra fence sections to enclose the whole area. The leader of this project was Mal Darwent (pictured left) assisted by Reg Hollonds and other Shed members. Thanks Mal for your dedication to see this project through. Top job! Mal is not standing still and has already started on his next project ‘Making an electrical kindling wood splitter’. Selling kindling is another fundraising activity that the Shed is involved with.

Shed Torque

  1. Birthday Boys for May — Congratulations to Graeme Caulfield, Reg Hollonds, Warwick Mitchell, John Hobday and Ciro Luchini who celebrate a birthday in May.
  2. Alpine U3A Movie Night — On Wednesday 12th May starting at 7:00 pm at the Senior Citizens Centre, Tawonga Crescent, Mt Beauty. Shed members can come as guests. Supper is provided at the interval. The movie is called Fisherman’s Friends. The film is based on a true story about Fisherman’s Friends, a group of ten Cornish fishermen from Port Isaac who were signed by Universal Records and achieved a top 10 hit with their debut album of traditional sea shanties.
The Plot — A fast living, cynical London music executive, Danny, reluctantly heads to Cornwall on his colleague Henry’s stag weekend, where he’s pranked by his boss, Troy, into trying to sign a group of shanty-singing fishermen. Danny becomes the ultimate ‘fish out of water’ struggling to gain the respect and enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band that consists of Jim, Jago, Leadville and Rowan, who all value friendship and community over fame and fortune. Attempting to overcome the fishermen’s skepticism about the music business, Danny finds himself drawn into the community, has his integrity tested and ultimately is shown the meaning of loyalty, love and friendship. This forces Danny to re-evaluate what really matters in life; ultimately giving him the chance of a different kind of success which leads to him falling in love with Jim’s daughter, Alwyn.

The Men’s Table – men serving men

We don’t just talk about “footy and sh*t”

The Men’s Table creates a unique environment for men to share openly about their lives, their challenges, their highs and lows with a group of men who they learn to trust and respect.

The Men’s Table creates a sense of belonging, community, peer support and camaraderie that is lacking for many men, even for some who already have a group of mates.

It’s healthy to share feelings and belong in community (healthy men, masculinities, healthy communities).

What are they? — Men’s Tables are self-organising local groups that meet once a month for dinner, in a safe friendly environment, sharing the highs and lows of life. Good food in your tummy and stuff off your chest, as men listen, talk and share.

NEWS Flash (Rebound Program on Alpine Radio 96.5 FM)
Linda Parkinson and Kitty Vigo are interviewing Ben Hughes from The Men’s Table next Tuesday 11 May between 11.00 and 12.00 on the Rebound program on Alpine Radio 96.5 FM. Ben is a founding member of The Men’s Table and will provide an overview of what its about.

The West Wing update

Let there be LIGHT! Thanks to Dick Puttyfoot and his assistance Shane Clooney the power was turned on last week. This was a huge job by the boys. David Quick (local electrician) oversaw the work and signed off on it. Currently, Barry Hinson is working on installing the wash bench and sink and together with Ian Howley is constructing a handrail and gate for the mezzanine stairs. Landscaping has started on the north side.

ANZAC Day
