2022 Alpine Shire Australia Day Awards

Congratulations Dick on your Australia Day Awards — Local Achiever Kiewa Valley & Citizen of the Year (for the whole Shire). BBQ & Presentation — Friday 18th February

The Friday 18th February BBQ will start at 11:30 am for a sit-down lunch at 12 noon. The cost is $7.00. Please bring the correct money. Feel free to bring a friend and introduce them to the Men’s Shed. There is plenty of opportunity for socialising and catching up with mates. Members and friends must show proof of Full Vax prior to entry.

We have a speaker — Paul L’Huillier will be giving a talk about a five day crossing of the Simpson Desert he and his friends did last year travelling from Mt Dare (SA) in the west to Birdsville (Qld) in the east for 650 km and crossing 1,136 sand dunes in five days. The presentation includes slides and videos.

Nuts & Bolts

  1. Birthday Boys for January & February — Congratulations to birthday boys: Duncan Robertson, Phil Armitage, Mark Hardidge, Alf Thistlethwaite, Larry Gardam & Paul Haskett who celebrate a birthday.
  2. Condolences to Gary & Jackquie Hollonds (and grandparents Reg & Yvonne Hollonds) on the passing of son Chris.
  3. Monthly BBQ & Presentation — This will be held on Friday 18th February at the Shed for a sit done lunch at 12 noon. Cost is $7.00.   4. Committee Meeting — First for the year. Monday 14th February. Any member that wishes to raise concerns or issues or has ideas that they would like pursued please contact the secretary <secretary@mountbeautymensshed.org.au>.
  5. Tools & Equipment for loan — as a Men’s Shed member you are entitled to borrow tools/equipment on a short-term basis. There is a Registration Book in the Recreation Room to fill out. Make sure you check with the Day Shed Supervisor that it is OK to borrow that item. It could be being used by another member for a project. Also, the Shed has a ‘Stair Climbing Trolley’ that it shares with the Kiewa Valley Opp Shop in Tawonga Crescent and this can be borrowed from them. Just mention you are a men’s shed member when asking..
  6. 9th Men’s Shed Gathering (Conference) — Albury NSW (Tuesday 29th to Wednesday 30th March 2022). The registration fee is $175.00. If any member would like to attend the Shed maybe able to part subside the fee. Let us know. We hope to have good representation at the Gathering.

Projects

From old to nearly new. What wonderful workmanship. Alf Thistlethwaite restored this old chair for a client. Thanks Alf.
Women in the Men’s Shed Program run in conjunciton with the Mt Beauty Neighbourhood Centre. Instructors from left Irvin Beeston and Dick Puttyfoot. This is the fourth year that Dick & Irvin have conducted this program. It runs for eight weeks.

Dick Puttyfoot completeing signage for YMCA Howmans Gap Alpine Centre & Parks Victoria. Dick uses a router connected to computer software that he programs to cut the signs. Quality work.
Kindling Splitter is still a work in progress. From left Reg Hollonds & Mal Darwent. Mal has been working on the Splitter for sometime now. Why? Because Mal is such a talented person with trade skills to die for that he is always in demand for advice and offering assistance on any project. Mai, thanks for your patience and skills.
Another community project nearing completion. Barry Hinson welding feet onto the legs of the RSL seats that will be located at the Centotaph. The welded feet will be used to secure the seat to the concret foundations with bolts.
New Woodwork Bench — Left Warwick Mitchell & Shane Clooney working on the construction of a quality woodwork bench that can be accessed from all sides and has two state of the art vices attached.

2021 Christmas Lunch

2021 Christmas Lunch. We had 28 in attendance and it was a very socialable event. Thanks to Mark & Maureen Hardidge, Dick Puttyfoot and Shane Clooney for preparing the food and the other members who assisted with setting up the room. News Year Day Garage Sale – very successful

This years Garage Sale was very successful with $1,236.00 being raised for Shed projects and member services. Thanks to all members who contributed either with help and/or donations of items to sell.

Shed Wireless – a new initiative from AMSA – Click [HERE] to listen. Professionally produced and has heaps of Shed information. Each episode is ~1hr 15min. It is definitely worth checking out. It currently has an audience of over 10,000 listeners in a number of countries.

Ian Howley – Life Membership

Ian Howley was awarded Life Membership of the Men’s Shed at the November BBQ by president Dick Puttyfoot. The award was in recognition of his outstanding contribution as the Shed Construction Manager. He performed this role with expertise and dedication in the building of the main shed and the new extension. Ian is a foundation member and a committee member for 10 years. The Shed Xmas Luncheon is becoming a bit of a tradition. For those that RSVP see you there on Sunday at 11:30 am for a sit-down lunch at 12 noon.

Projects

Barry Hinson (left) & Reg Hollonds installed the Navy, Army & Air Force plaques on the Cenotaph. Soon two refurbished seats will be located there as well.

Irvin Beeston is amongst the many items that he makes and sells on behalf of the Shed. Last Saturday morning Irvin conducted a Handicrafts sale at the Shed selling three Ladder Golf Sets as shown plus many other items from his Cart. Thanks, Irvin.

Don’t miss out on this one. The Shed Xmas Luncheon is becoming a bit of a tradition so make sure you get your RSVP in by Monday 22nd November or you will miss out. It’s popular!

The Men Shed is having their Christmas Lunch at the Alex McCullough Hall next to the Neighbourhood Centre on the 5th of December 2021 and all members, partners and friends are invited.

Lunch will consist of roast beef and/or roast chicken with all the trimmings, plum pudding and custard and cream. The cost will be $15.00.

Relocation of equipment

Relocation of dust extractor piping – from left Mal Darwent & Irvin Beeston. With the movement of the metalwork equipment to the West Wing, some of the woodworking equipment is being moved to the south end of the Shed. Thanks to North East Home Improvement Co for the loan of the mobile scaffolding.
A lot of movement and rearranging of equipment in the main Shed.

Evaporative Coolers installed

Two Evaporative Coolers have been installed in the main Shed & the West Wing.

  6. U3A Film Night — At the Senior Citzens Centre – Tawonga Cres on Wednesday 10th November starting at 7:00 pm supper at the interval. Note – you don’t need to be a U3A member to attend. Movie is called Red Joan. It is the story of Joan Stanley, who was exposed as the K.G.B.’s longest-serving British spy. English-born Stanley (Dame Judi Dench), a Soviet and Communist Party sympathizer, becomes employed as a British government civil servant and gets recruited by the K.G.B. in the mid-1930s. She successfully transfers nuclear bomb secrets to Soviet Russia, which enables them to keep up with the west in the development of atomic weapons, and remains undetected as a spy for over half a century.

  8. Evaporative Cooling System for the Shed — Two coolers are now installed. Thanks to NE Heating & Cooling for the installation of on one in the main Shed and the other in the West Wing. Dick Puttyfoot arranged for this to happen. Thanks Dick. Funds came from a Federal Government Volunteer Grant of $5,000.00 and the Shed contributed $3,000.00 from general funds.
  9. Cleaning Roster Duties — Noel has prepared a new roaster. A Duty LIst has been put up for display in the Kitchen and Toilet area. Please read and complete the tasks. Why am I on the Roster? The Shed policy is that all committee members and other regular users of the Shed either for work or socialising are expected to ‘do their bit’.
  10. Storage Shed Clean Out — A major task was cleaning up around the Storage Shed and also inside the shed. Two trailer loads of disgarded timber was taken to the tip and at last we have room to move in there. Thanks to Phil Armitage who built some extra storage racks.

Professor David Wood’s Funeral arrangements

It is with sadness that we inform you that David passed away on Tuesday 26th October after a long battle with cancer. Our condolences go to Elene and the family. 

David was a supporter and longtime Shed member. He was a stalwart of Alpine U3A. He was a life member, he held important executive positions and taught a number of courses during his eight years as a member. He was also the driver of the Probus Club of Mount Beauty.
