Major Shed News

  • Football/Netball Gate volunteers — Please contact the co-ordinator Mark Hardidge if you can assist: Mob: ‬‭0407 549 651‬ or Email: <maurk01@bigpond.com>.
  • ‘Tools Down’ Thursday mornings —  The committee discussed whether we should persevere with this initiative and because of low attendance have decided to discontinue it. In the spring we will trial opening the Shed on a Saturday morning (once per month) as a social get-together as well as offering items made in the Shed for sale to the public. Garage sale items would also be offered for sale.
  • Grants — The Shed has been fortunate to have applied for and been successful with two grant applications. One was to update our Apple iMac computer that is internet connected and free for members to use. The Wi-Fi is also free for members to use with their mobile phones, laptops and tablets. The other grant was for a larger Marquee (3m x 4.5m) for use especially by the volunteers at our Footygate Raffles. It’s a quality product with the Shed name and logo on the front. The second part of this grant was for another ‘Compactus’ storage unit that will be used in the Shed extension. Shed Extension Grant — The Victorian Department of Health & Human Services has finally made the application available and Ian Howley and myself are currently working through it. We will be applying for $60,000.00. Estimated total project cost is $106,000. The Shed has to contribute $46,000.00 in cash and in-kind labour/materials. It has to be finalised by the end of June. Notification of success or otherwise will not be until late December 2019.
  • Future BBQ’s — As in previous years, there will be no BBQ in June.
  • Donation of six chairs  — Alf Thistlethwaite kindly donated six quality chairs to the Shed. Thanks, Alf.

UKV Shed News – fundraising

May 8, 2019 By Paul L'Huillier

Fundraising for our Shed Extension — West Peak Hotel

This Friday night 10th May from 5:30 pm. The West Peak Hotel and the Men’s Shed is conducting another raffle which is put on by the Hotel. The Hotel provides the tickets and the prizes (which the Shed pays for out of the takings on the night). We sell the tickets and already have volunteer sellers. We need your support again at this function so come down for a meal which is available from 5:30 pm, buy a few tickets and enjoy a fun social evening. Raffle draw is at 7:00 pm — usually have about 30 draws so your chances of a win are very good.

Football/Netball Gate volunteers — We need members to volunteer to collect entry money and sell raffle tickets at Dederang-Mt Beauty Home Football & Netball games (a major Shed fundraiser for our NEW extension). Please contact the co-ordinator Mark Hardidge if you can assist: Mob: ‬‭0407 549 651‬ or Email: <maurk01@bigpond.com>. The next home game is this Saturday 11th May at Mount Beauty against Tallangatta. We need help with this project so please consider offering for a couple of hours.

‘Tools Down’ morning —  Each Thursday 9:30 am to 12 noon. This is a time with no work (tools down). It is a time when members can just come along for some socialising, camaraderie and fellowship. This can take the form of talk, discussion, reading, cards, watch TV, watch a movie, learn some IT, or other quiet activities that take members interests. Each Thursday members will be treated to a special morning tea i.e. extra goodies. There is no charge for the morning tea. If a member wishes to bring along some alcohol they are welcome to do so. Please support this initiative and bring a friend.

‘Walking Off The War WITHIN’-Sat 23 March 8:30 am

March 20, 2019 By Paul L'Huillier

Shed member Josh New, an army veteran, is inviting you to walk with him this Saturday.

You will be participating in a challenge called “Walking Off the War Within” which raises awareness of mental health issues surrounding our army veterans and emergency services personnel. The aim of the challenge is to walk 20 km.

The walk will be around the Mount Beauty Pondage a distance of ~3 km. Josh says “It’s not about the distance you walk, you can walk as little or as much as you like, it is more about getting together and raising awareness about mental health”.

The Men’s Shed has agreed to assist by conducting sausage sizzle on the morning with the aim of feeding the walkers and raising funds for Josh New’s fundraiser where funds go to Ballarat Legacy.

We are meeting at the Men’s Shed at 8 am and starting the walk at 8:30 am. We will be finishing at the West Peak Hotel for a hard-earned drink!

Come on down and support Josh with this initiative. Good exercise, good friends and very social. Bring a friend.

The Mount Beauty walk is being conducted in conjunction with the main event walk to be held in Ballarat with similar walks to be held around the country in coming weeks.

Pre-Christmas News Extra

December 13, 2018 By Paul L'Huillier

A Christmas message from President Dick Puttyfoot

“Thank-you to all the members and committee that have worked hard and well with each other throughout the year. To all members and their families I wish you a Happy and Joyful Christmas with another new year of fufillment and happiness.”

Christmas Luncheon — This was held on Wednesday 12th December 2018. We had 42 men, their partners and friends attending. Again Mark Hardidge (Chef de Shed) and his team put together a terrific luncheon. Thanks Mark. Our President Dick Puttyfoot (8th year) gave an overview of the year and thanked the committee for the support. Our resident bush poet Irvin Beeston recited three poems that were very entertaining. Lindsay Ikin donated a plant pot he made for auction. Warwick Mitchell acted as the auctioneer. Thanks Lindsay and Warwick. Thanks to the Mt Beauty Neighbourhood Centre for the use of their hall and kitchen and to the members who helped set up the hall.

Street Christmas Decorations — Last Sunday seven members erected the street Christmas decorations for the Chamber of Commerce. This is the 5th year the Shed has done this. We are paid for the job. Thanks to Campbell Ford (Chamber Rep.) who we liaise with to get the job done. Also thanks to the North East Home Improvement Centre who lend out their mobile scaffolding at no charge. Dismantling will be done mid January. Hope a few different members can assist.

Shed Holiday Dates — Closing on Wednesday 12th Dec 2018 & re-opening Tuesday 15th Jan 2019 (sausage sizzle at 12 noon).

No shortage of food. The variety and quality were tops!

Bush poet Irvin Beeston reciting his poetry.

Elene Wood three layered cake which she made for us. Thanks Elene (Studio E Cakes – Tawonga – Mob: 0409 673 192)
