Shed Re-Opening

November 10, 2020 By Paul L'Huillier

Please note – If these emails do not display correctly in the email application that you use e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Gmail, Hotmail, Apple Mail, Windows Live Mail etc you can always view the content on the Shed’s website. A shortcut for this is displayed at the top of the email ‘View this email in your web browser’.

The Victorian Government announced on Sunday 8th November 2020 that as from Tuesday 10th November ‘Libraries, youth centres and other community spaces can open.

Numbers attending the Shed and spacing are of no more than 10 per space in their Shed and a maximum of 20 indoors subject to a density of quotient of 1 per 4m2.

Shedders are also reminded that they can have a gathering of Shedders outside the Shed of no more than 10  people.

The Shed committee is now in a position to re-open the Shed and have decided to do this on Tuesday 17th November taking into account the hygiene and distancing requirements. We all need to be conscious of this when interacting with other members and not become ‘slack’ – ‘we will be alright Jack!‘ We are all in that vulnerable age group so let us look-out for one another and do the right thing. The Shed has been closed for 16 weeks now so it’s all go again!

Lunch — We are planning to have a sausage/hot dog in bread/roll at around 12 noon so come along (it’s not a BBQ).

See you at the Shed.

Dick Puttyfoot
President

Shed protocols that MUST be adhered to if you intend to visit the Shed

  • Wearing of masks — all members attending the Shed will need to wear a face mask and must supply their own.
  • Use of hand sanitiser — use it religiously!. We will have plenty available.
  • Disinfectant wipes — must use to wipe down tools & machinery etc that you intend using.
  • Drinking Mugs — must bring your own and either store in a locker or take it home and bring it each time.
  • Maximum of 10 members allowed at any one time in the Recreation Room as permitted by the 4 sqm per person in a space rule. The 1.5m distancing rule will always apply.
  • Morning Tea — If there is more than 10 then others go outside if weather is suitable or into the workshop area. Alternatively, if we get a ‘crowd’ we may have to stagger the time.
  • Sign-In Book — We need to make sure we sign in & out so a good record of attendance is kept. If a ‘virus outbreak’ did occur health authorities would need to be able to track people.
  • Shed Cleaning — This will be done on Wednesday (pm) as per Roster.

Shed Torque

  • Rest in peace Herbie Ougham — Our mate passed away on Monday morning 9th November. Herb was to turn 90 years in January 2021. We will let you know of funeral arrangements. Our condolences to his family and friends.
  • Condolences also go to the families of Ian Erbacher and Bob Williams (Mountain Creek) who passed away recently.
  • Shed Extension — The internal fit-out. Ian Howley (Project Construction Manager) has a plan to get this work started. Orders for timber, electrical items etc are well in hand. Like when work was done on the Main Shed we opened three days a week to get the job completed and this can happen again.

September 12, 2020 By Paul L'Huillier

Annual General Meeting

The 2020 AGM is being held on Friday 18th September starting at 10:00 am via video link. The application used for the video conferencing meeting is called ZOOM. We need a quorum for the meeting so please consider participating.

To be involved, you will need to download the FREE ZOOM software from <https://zoom.us/download>. Select  ‘Zoom Clients for Meetings’ by clicking on the Download Button. Follow the onscreen instructions. You will need to register as per the screen information.

Using a computer (or laptop) for ZOOM is better than other devices, though there is a ZOOM App for tablets and mobiles. Go to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store for Android devices.

Your invitation to the AGM — If you wish to take part in the AGM via ZOOM then you will need to indicate this to the secretary <secretary@mountbeautymensshed.org.au> by Tuesday 15th September. Once this is received you will be emailed a meeting INVITATION LINK.

Nomination Form — If you would like to be nominated for a committee position please download the Word version of the Form [HERE], type into it (no signatures required) and email it back to the secretary as above by Wednesday 16th September 2020. A Proxy Form can also be obtained by emailing a request to the secretary as above.

Membership Fees — At the AGM the committee will recommend to members that the membership fee for 2020/21 is increased by $10.00 i.e. from $35.00 to $45.00. The membership fee has not increased for five years. This increase is necessary to help cover our increased insurance costs for the new Shed Extension.

AGM Agenda — 1. Presidents welcome; 2. Apologies; 3. Confirm Minutes of 2019 AGM; 4. Presidents Report; 5. Shed Extension Progress

The shell of the Shed Extension is now complete. Nothing more can be done by us until COVID-19 lockdown restrictions are eased. We wait….

Shed Torque…

  • Chamber of Commerce — After being in recess for four years the Mount Beauty & District Chamber of Commerce as been reformed with a new and enthusiastic committee. The executive is — President: Glenyse Peacock, Vice President: Linda Griffith-Brown; Secretary – Simone Dowel and Treasurer: Courtney Sullivan. The Shed has joined as an associate member.
  • ATO News (DGR certification) — The Treasury Laws Amendment (2020 Measures No. 2) Bill 2020 to introduce a general category of Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) for community sheds has passed in both houses of parliament. Deductible Gift Recipients (DGRs) are organisations (like Men’s Sheds) which can receive donations that are tax-deductible. If a donation is tax-deductible, donors can deduct the amount of their donation from their taxable income when they lodge their tax return. For us, this MIGHT mean that a person or business would donate funds to us and by doing so they can deduct the donation from their taxable income. People or businesses who feel good about assisting community organisations might donate funds for that purpose. A win for us and them.
  • Les Bevan — Recently Les had a hip operation. We wish him well during his rehab and a speedy recovery.

Doing Your 30…

This is pretty good advice for all us Shedders, especially during the lockdown. To stay healthy 30 minutes of exercise is a minimum per day. Standing up doesn’t count, wandering around the house doesn’t cut it either. Open the door and get out there… (walk, ride …..)

Shed Extension Progress

Shed construction manager Ian Howley reports that “the main contractor Gentile Steel Fabrications (Tony & son Jason) have completed most of the construction of the Shed extension. They should finish within the next two weeks. Some plumbing work will then be done by C & N Jones Plumbing. We will need to connect the stormwater drains.

However, under current restrictions members are unable to attend/work in the Shed so we will have to wait until Stage 3 COVID-19 is lifted before we can start the rest of the work on the extension.

In the interim, we are proceeding with the purchase of timber, electrical materials etc so we are ready to go when permitted“.

Roof, walls, windows and roller doors finalised. Tony and son Jason on the job.
The shell of the shed extension nearing completion as at 27th August. Work started on 9th June 2020.

Get Well

We wish long time member and supporter David Wood all the best with his ongoing medical testing and procedures.

Shed Closed & Other News

August 6, 2020 By Paul L'Huillier

Future Shed Operations

The Shed has a duty of care to its members, and as a consequence of the Coronavirus threat, the committee has been forced to close the Shed to members. This is a Victorian Government health directive. Because our members are in the most vulnerable age group, this closure will stay in place until the health authorities indicate that the threat has passed.

This decision is in line with AMSA and VMSA recommendations to close Sheds at this time. Click [HERE] for the VMSA directive.

Len Sims departure

Len and wife Adele are leaving the lovely Kiewa Valley and heading back to Queensland. Len has been a Shed member for six years and is a stalwart of its operations. He has been a committee member and is always available to lend a hand. Locally he has become famous for his ‘renovation’ skills. We wish Len and Adele all the best for the future.

Last Tuesday the Shed held a morning tea and presentation function to wish Len goodbye. There were 23 members in attendance.

From left: Len Sims & Dick Puttyfoot (president). The gift given to Len on his departure so he will not forget about the six years living in Mount Beauty. Thanks to Duncan Robertson for supplying the aerial photograph taken from a glider.
